Tyra Banks Fat? Are You Kidding Me?

Bravo to Tyra Banks on speaking up and sharing her thoughts on the photos that were taken recently of her in a swimsuit where she was called "America's Next Top Waddle". Tyra is fighting back by sharing with the world her true weight and even more importantly her feelings on the modeling industry's pressure to keep it's models paper thin.

I know little about Tyra, but happened to catch her this morning on Good Morning America, and immediately became a fan. She really has her head on straight when it comes to this particular issue. Tomorrow she's doing a show on the pressures models face and the tragic consequences to their health. Hats off to Tyra Banks for dedicating an hour to show women how ridiculous this industry is.

Top models and those trying to make it in the industry, starve themselves sometimes to well under 100 lbs. Have you heard the term "walking hangers"? That's literally what they're viewed as.

Focus on your health first! It's a given that being overweight is unhealthy, but we have strange ideas about what attractive really looks like. I say keep your curves! Hit the gym, eat a balanced diet, and let your body take the shape it was meant to have. Don't starve yourself, losing muscle in the process, and you're health along the way. After all, if you feel good, you'll look good!

Coping with New Mommy Stress and Lack of Sleep

By Sherry Frewerd

You’re home with the new bundle of joy! This wonderful addition to your home and life means the world to you, and you should be jumping with excitement. So why don’t you feel terrific all of the time?

When you think of stress what first come to mind? Bad jobs, poor relationships etc., right? You’re correct, these areas cause stress, but did you know that even the so-called happiest times in your life can bring on stressful feelings? Yes, even the arrival of your new baby is a stressful event. No kidding, you’re saying. As soon as the baby is born your family and friends flood you with visits and want to get their hands on the baby. Combine that with the fact that hospitals aren’t always the best sources of information when it comes to what to do next as a new mom. They send you home with a smile and a ‘sign here’ and somewhere in your cloudy mommy brain you hope you can actually do ‘this.’

One of the major sources of new mommy stress is the extreme lack of sleep. Every new parent soon realizes that newborns don’t sleep much. At least not long enough to allow you to get some much needed rest. Add to that the hormonal changes in your own body, and you have a formula that’s guaranteed to be stressful. Sometimes you think you’ll never get a full night’s sleep again. And until the baby settles into a routine, you probably won’t.

To get through those first few months, here are some suggestions to help you get as much sleep as the baby will allow:

First of all, don’t try to be ‘Wonder-Mommy.’ When the baby goes down for a nap, lie down and take a small nap yourself. The housework that you think is calling your name will just have to wait until you’ve taken care of your needs. You don’t need to have a perfect house. There will be time for all that; give yourself a break whenever you get the opportunity.

Take your family and friends up on their offers of helping out with the baby. Now is not the time for an ‘I’ll show them’ attitude; you’ll only show them how quickly you can lose your mind from lack of sleep. If you have a willing mom or in law to help out, by all means take advantage of that for an afternoon.

When you put the baby to bed for the night, take some time to wind down and relax so you have a better chance of falling asleep. Take a bath scented with lavender; put on some soft music and pamper yourself a little. There’s probably some wonderful spa product that you received at your baby shower that would be great for relaxing in a hot bubbly tub. Don’t forget to include the new Daddy in the relaxation; new babies are often hard on them too.

There’s a lot to get used to with a newborn in your life, but with time and attention to your own needs and help from loved ones, you can get through the first difficult months with ease.

Winning Ways Scam Alert!

The other day I rec'd a letter in the mail with no return address, postmarked from Canada, with a check for $2,950. Hmmm? I was immediately suspicious. So, I set out to investigate. The letter that came with the check claimed I'd won a sweepstakes.

At the top of the letterhead it stated two of it's sponsors as Publishers Clearing House and Reader's Digest, so... for a moment I considered that maybe it was legitimate. I have entered sweeps with Reader's Digest several times in the past, but still... something seemed fishy. The letterhead looked out of focus and unprofessional. The header read "Winning Ways OnlineSweeps.com". I went to the computer and typed in Winning Ways, Scam and wouldn't you know it, my search led me to the real Winning Ways website with this important alert:

**HIGH ALERT** - We have been alerted that a company located in Mississauga, ON Canada is SCAMMING people with an International Lottery using OUR NAME. We have nothing to do with this, and we are warning you to NOT cash any checks you receive from them! This has been reported to the authorities. Please remember that you NEVER have to pay anything in order to receive a legitimate prize... We publish a newsletter with sweepstakes promotions from major US retailers, but we do not give out cash awards. Thank you for your understanding, and we are very sorry that you had to hear about our business in this awful manner.

So, there you go. This is a scam! You don't want to cash these checks, and I'd guess that a lot of people will. Who knows what happens when you do. Someone told me they suspected you're basically taking out a high interest loan by cashing the check. This check by the way, is real. It doesn't have anything on it's face or back that indicates you're taking out a loan or agreeing to join any type of program. It's just a check! So, there will be a temptation to head to the bank with it. Don't let yourself be taken!

Here's a scan of the letter. To view this full size, just click on the image. Hope this info saves someone from getting taken!

Woo Hoo! Another Puzzle Piece from HP!

Here's yet another piece to the 48 piece puzzle sponsored by your friends at HP! Payperpost.com and HP Have teamed up to give some lucky winner a cool $1000. Be the first PPP Postie to locate and assemble all the pieces to this puzzle and the money is all yours!

There are some pretty cool Digital Photo Printing tips and resources on the HP site. Learn a few photography basics on lighting and focusing your camera as well as ways of avoiding common photography mistakes.

As I've mentioned before, I'm a big fan of HP! I'm loving their site and the great line of products they offer. I'm sitting here at my computer drooling over the prospects of possibly purchasing a new HP camera! I'm still using a Kodak digital camera, one that mind you is going on 4 years old.... I think it's about time I stepped it up a notch. ; )

This is a sponsored post.

Dove Freebie.... Ultimate Clear Smooth Deodorant

Visit Dove, complete a short survey and recieve a free sample of their new deodorant. Allow 4-6 weeks for delivery, limited one per household.

Kid-Friendly Project... Make a Word Book!

I'm not a teacher, but I play one at home. ; ) After racking my brain for ideas on how to make learning less chore-like and more fun, I came up with what I hope will be an exciting project aimed at teaching my 4 and 5 year old how to read and write.

Tomorrow we'll start building our very own picture word books... I almost said dictionary, but since they'll lack definitions, I'm going with word book. Each of my two kids will be handed their own 3-ring binder to add pages to on an ongoing basis as we learn to identify words and find their placement. Sometimes I'll suggest the word, other times we'll pull words from stories, cartoons, kid-friendly websites, and their Merriam Webster Primary Dictionary.

So, what do I need? A few old magazines, some printable coloring pages and letter mazes from the internet, maybe a few coloring books, traceable letter and word printouts along with practice writing pages, some blank pages for gluing cut outs, maybe a few stickers and you have it! That's the project. So, how am I doing? Here we have sorting, cutting, gluing, drawing, coloring, spelling, writing, problem solving, and hopefully a lot of fun!

If this is successful, I'll post a few pictures in the coming days and weeks. If any of my reader's have suggestions, please feel free to comment!

Water Intoxication... Who Knew?

I'd never heard of anyone dying from consuming too much water until the story hit the news last week about Jennifer Strange. You may remember she was the 28 year old woman from Rancho Cardova, CA who died while competing to win a Nintendo Wii game.

So, how does this happen? Here's what you should know....

Water intoxication occurs as a very rapid intake of water pushes the balance of electrolytes within the body out of balance. When we consume significant amounts of water too quickly, we dilute our bodily fluids and create this shift in electrolytes. Cells begin to swell and die. Symptoms may vary, but often include light-headedness, headache, fatigue, confusion, sometimes followed by vomiting which then may progress to seizure or coma and as we've recently learned... even death. Some people will show no symptoms at all until it's too late.

Considering my target audience is mom's, I thought I'd share a link about water intoxication in infants... apparently they are in a high risk category. I've also recently learned that athletes sometimes fall to water intoxication.

So, how much water is too much? According to this link, you should not consume more than 72 oz in a day, unless you're participating in intense physical activity or living in a hot climate. That surprised me! I've been drinking nearly that much, consuming two 32 oz bottles a day. Guess I won't make it 3. Might be worthwhile to share this information with your friends who are increasing their water intake to lose weight.

Marissa Graham Story.... Dropped From News?

As wonderful as it is that this little girl has been found alive and well with no apparent physical wounds, I have to wonder why there is little to no press coverage aimed at finding her abductor? This creep will no doubt be looking for another child after all. I've not heard a peep out of the media in many days and have been waiting to post on this issue until they released a sketch or better information to help the public identify a possible suspect, but to date I've found nothing online, television, or radio. In fact, the only place I've found anything recent concerning this story is on a couple message boards where concerned citizens are wanting to know the same thing I do... why no press?

This is a news story and the story isn't over! I ask that everyone reading this post to email the major networks as well as their local networks and remind them that this is still an unsolved crime. There is a child abductor on the loose in our country looking to snatch up our little girls from the streets of our neighborhoods. Someone must know something! The more time that passes, the harder it will be to find this pathetic excuse for a human being.

Here are the major news networks email addresses:

Here's the little bit of information we have on the suspect: White male, clean shaven, a pasty complexion, and most likely brown hair in his mid- 30's to mid- 40's, possibly having access to a white Chevrolet Cavalier style of vehicle and a purple SUV or 4-door mini van. This is so vague, so let's pray we find out more information soon. For more information on this story visit this link.

        Early Reader's... My Recommendation

After looking high and low for early readers for my 5 year old, I had almost become convinced that what I had set out to find didn't exist. When I was young, I started out reading very simple stories about Spot, Dick, and Jane.... easy 4 letter word stories that were repetitive and easy to learn. These basic early readers did wonders for my confidence levels as a child just starting to read, but a modern day version was nowhere to be found... or so I thought.

Thanks to a conversation I had with another mom a couple months ago I discovered Scholastic does have a series of books for the earliest of readers. These books are called Bob Books and after getting the recommendation from a friend I immediately ordered them from Amazon.com. I found them there for about $11.50 a set.

They're paperback books, very small and easy for little hands to hold (about the size of a 4x6 photo), and are nothing fancy at all. Don't judge a book by it's cover, or by it's drawings! The box of 12 miniature books has been a hit with my kids. They've found humor in the simple stories and my 5 year old can sound out the words easily and with the same confidence I recall experiencing at his age.

This is not a sponsored post! lol, some of my posts are, but they're labeled as such when they are. This post was only motivated by my desire to share a great find with my readers. So, with that in mind, I hope you'll consider these books for your own kids! You'll find books for beginning readers, advanced readers, word families, compound words, and long vowels. Best wishes and happy reading!

        PET Dairy Bottle Freebie

Ok, this might not be as exciting as a free perfume sample, but it's something you might find a use for... and it's a collectible, so that's always a bonus. Really the only downside to this offer is that you're required to request it by mail... rather than having the luxury of an online request form. More of a hassle for sure, but even with the .39 cent stamp this still makes for a great deal! PET is offering this free Dairy bottle to commemorate 75 years of quality dairy products.

Here's the link to follow for the mailing address and offer details. :)

Hard to Find Movies & Discount Prices

Sometimes that movie from years ago that you had on VHS, is nothing more than a found memory. If you're like me, you have several movie favorites that are now lost to your parent's basement of dusty boxes, not that you'd want the VHS format anyway, but wouldn't it be nice to be able to watch those movies again? Maybe share them with your kids? Most of us have gone through the process of trying to update our video library from VHS to DVD. Have you ever gone looking for an old favorite on DVD and not found it anywhere? Or maybe you do find it online, but you're not ready to settle for a used copy on Ebay.

        Visit http://www.buymovies.com
for the best selection of movie DVD's at discounted rates. This site offers special collector's editions of some of the most popular movies of today as well as those hard to find classics of yesterday. You'll even find movie posters on this site, a must have for the true movie fan! I think my son would just love the Pirates of the Carribean movie poster they're now selling at BuyMovies.com!

This site will even answer your movie related questions via email, promising to help you find those hard to get movies and special editions unavailable from your local retailers.

Link Found Between Mom's Dental Health and Prematurity

I found an article today while looking for something somewhat unrelated that I'd like to share with my readers on the importance of good dental hygiene while pregnant.

We already knew that poor dental habits could lead to cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss, but at least one new study has made a connection between bacteria in the mouth and the negative affects on the unborn's ability to thrive in the womb. Certainly this doesn't explain all preterm births, but if you're pregnant, it's one more thing you should be sure to take care of. Brushing, flossing, and taking good care of you teeth has apparently never been so important as when you're pregnant. Considering gum diseases like gingivitis is irreversible, it might be a good idea to pay extra attention to our mouths long before trying to have children.

As disgusting as it is to think about, our mouths are home to hundreds of different types of bacteria, some of which aren't so healthy to keep around. One type of bacteria specifically noted in this article was Actinomyces Naselundii which has been linked to lower birth weight and preterm delivery.

Our bodies house many healthy bacteria too, but I guess the point of this all is to remind us to take good care of our teeth, gums, and mouth in general. We should be doing this anyway! I'll be writing another post here in a the next couple days on controlling the bacteria growth on your toothbrush. Be sure to check back for that article!

          Choosing to Homeschool

The First Steps in Choosing to Homeschool Your Children
          By
          Sherry Frewerd

The value of a quality education is obvious. The method or type of education is often debated however. Traditionally, we as a country have leaned toward formal education taking place in public or private schools.

In recent years, however, many parents have decided to take a non-traditional approach and are homeschooling their children. In earlier years, homeschooling was prevalent, but with the start of formal school systems, and with more women entering the work force, teaching children at home lost popularity. Modern day parents have made this important decision because they are often unhappy with the curriculum of their local school or they believe themselves to be the best educator for their children.

If you are considering the possibility of homeschooling your child, for whatever reason, you already know the importance of the decision. This step cannot be made lightly or without analyzing all the pros and cons involved. If your child is already attending school then you will have to take him or her out of their familiar surroundings that provide not only a formal education, but friends and socialization. Making the transition to homeschooling means that from here on you will bear the responsibility for your child's intellectual development.

Because of the importance of a child's education and future, specific guidelines are created by state and local governments to ensure consistency and quality of a homeschooling curriculum. These guidelines must be met before you can begin homeschooling your child. A good idea is to obtain your own area guidelines and consider each item before you make the final decision to homeschool. You will be able to predict any possible issues that may make the experience less than what you are desiring.

Depending on where you live in the United States, the requirements for homeschooling vary from a minimum of simple notification of intent to homeschool to submitting any available public school records, creating a curriculum, parent-teacher accreditation and home visits from local education officials. You may also be required to regularly submit test scores and attendance records. It is very important for you to find out the different requirements for home schooling in your state. For one, it will help you make sure that once you home school your child, your child’s education is actually being recognized by the state. Without state approval, your home schooling may not be regarded, which may make it harder for your child to enter a university or college. Second, the state may provide you with various forms and guidebooks as you home school your child. This assistance may prove valuable to you, especially if you are home schooling for the first time. Third, by finding out these requirements, you will be able to submit to the state all the required documents that you must submit periodically. In this way, you are also assured that your child is at grade level with other children enrolled in a traditional school setting.

When doing research on homeschooling in your local area, the education authority will be able to advise you about the college application process of homeschoolers. Home schooled children may be required a certain number of steps that regular applicants do not have to take in order to qualify for their chosen university. Some universities may require your child to take the G.E.D., an exam that will help test the sufficiency of their knowledge from home school to be considered as qualified college applicants, while others may require state accreditation. Moreover, by visiting your local education authority you will also find out the various state and local government scholarships for which your child may or may not qualify.

Choosing to homeschool your child is a major investment in time and responsibility, and not one that should be made without vast research. Talk to other homeschooling parents and don't be afraid to ask questions about the pros and cons of their chosen lifestyle. Many parents feel that they are indeed the best educator for their children, and there are groups available where both parents and children can meet others like themselves and create fun social environments, decreasing feelings of isolation. Research has shown that homeschooled children who have spent quality time with their parents are loving and confident individuals later in life. There are many benefits of homeschooling, time with your child being only one. You will be able to say later on in life that you were available for your child and helped mold them into the people the become.

          Marissa Graham (updated)

Correction.... the abductor is not in custody. Initial news reports were incorrect. Authorities are looking for a white man in a purple SUV.
RECOVERED SAFE IN NEW MEXICO!!! WOO HOO!
According to Fox News just moments ago, Marissa has been found alive and her abductor is in custody! You gotta love a happy ending! ;)

In light of the news story concerning the two missing boys from the state of Missouri last week, I've made the decision to highlight a missing child from time to time on Mommy Space. Sometimes I'll select a child who has been recently abducted... other times I may chose a child like Shawn Hornbeck who has been missing for years.

My first missing child highlight is that of Marissa Graham. This 10-year old girl is believed to have been abducted on Thursday evening from Texhoma, OK. She may be in the company of a white man in his mid 30's to early 40's, possibly driving a white car... make of which is believed to be a Chevrolet Cavalier. Naturally you should keep your eyes pealed for this child in any type of vehicle, since often times these details change or are incorrect to begin with.

Marissa has reddish-blond hair and blue eyes, is about 4 feet tall and weighs approximately 60 lbs.

If you believe you've seen Marissa at any time since Thursday when she disappeared, even if it's just a hunch, please report this sighting to the authorities. Apparently someone had this hunch concerning Shawn Hornbeck 3 years before he was recovered and didn't act on it. If you have a hunch that you know where Marissa is or are suspicious of the behavior of someone you know, please don't convince yourself that you couldn't hold an important piece to this puzzle. Let the authorities sort it out.

Irritated by Baby Study on Beautiful People

Sometimes we connect dots in a distorted way when we're trying to understand human behavior or really anything for that matter. I understand that there are benefits to understanding what characteristics of human thought, behavior, and opinion are attributed to nature and what's attributed to nurture, but sometimes the conclusions researchers walk away with are either just ridiculous or just too obvious for words.

Have you heard about the study making the news showing infants prefer to look at beautiful people? Hmmm... so they're suggesting that we're born to prefer beautiful things... is that really a news story? Don't we all appreciate beauty? This doesn't just apply to beautiful faces, but I would think we're all born with an appreciation for beauty in general. Nature had provided us with so much awe and wonder, in things like mountainscapes, butterflies, rainbows, puppy dogs, and yes, attractive people. I seriously doubt one could ever convincingly argue that we have to be taught to prefer beauty. I would argue we're all guilty of this, but I use the word "guilty" loosely because honestly I don't find anything wrong with it.

The problem isn't that we prefer beauty. That's healthy, normal, understandable, reasonable, expected, and I do believe God-given. The problem is that some of us judge people based on their beauty or lack thereof. This is taught! We're not taught to notice whether someone is beautiful, just how to react to it. Ok, so are babies making judgements about people based on their looks? I seriously doubt it, but I would guess that this starts early in life.

As adults we all make judgements of others based on their appearance. We can deny this all day, but we do it. We decide based on appearance what a person is worth to us as a friend, a coworker, an employer, a playmate for our children... and on and on. We may not speak to someone we feel is stunning out of jealousy, or on the alternative side of things may avoid a conversation with someone that isn't easy on the eyes just because it makes us uncomfortable... either way, it's a problem for society.

We don't chose our faces, we don't chose our shape (to a point). Some of us are fashion-challenged, have bumps in our noses, don't know how to get our eyeliner on right, but we should teach our children that we're no better or worse than the person standing next to us based on the shell we live in. We really need to teach our kids to judge others based on a person's heart value. That takes a lot of work! It doesn't come naturally... not for any of us. I would even argue that we can learn as we teach. The best way to learn any subject is to teach it!

I guess I don't really agree that babies are somehow prejudicial. They aren't forming judgements about people, they're just appreciating beauty. We all can appreciate beauty and not be guilty of any crime against society... it's only criminal when we allow our appreciation or lack thereof to effect how we treat another human being. Let's nurture in our children a true appreciation of people for who they are on the inside and as we go the extra mile to create in them a heart for people, maybe teach ourselves something along the way.

          Toys & Child Development

What Toys Will Help My Child Develop Properly
          By Joe Collinsworth

Developing your children so they grow up like the little angels you want them to be starts from day one. It is very important to begin utilizing various tools, resources, and toys that will ensure they are growing and learning appropriately.

This article will take you through the very critical first year of your child’s development.

You may not have considered using playtime to help your new baby grow and develop, but that is exactly what healthy infants need! So, let’s have some fun!

Not only is visual, audial and sensory stimulation important for your child’s development, but if you offer your child this kind of stimulation from an early age, your child will become more involved in the world around him and his natural curiosity will lead the way.

Remember, they are like a little sponge. They will take in everything around them and absorb it into their little developing brains.

In the beginning, your baby can’t hold a toy or sit or stand to play with an object, but she can watch mobiles and brightly colored crib ‘hangings’ that will help her focus her eyes. Finding things that will hold their attention will be tough, but you will notice items they like and items they don’t like very quickly.

Her vision is a bit fuzzy but she can see things that are about 8-12 inches from her face. So, in addition to mobiles, you can decorate the walls around her crib with animals, figures or brightly colored shapes with lots of contrast. She will love that! Coming up with ideas and getting others together to help is a fun time and will give you a chance to enjoy the new addition to your lives.

You can also play a music box or a CD or tape with lullabies or soothing music your child will love. There is some great developmental music your baby is sure to love.

Movies and videos work well too. We have found that because t.v. has commercials, our little guy loses interest and never regains. So we have found that baby Einstein videos and full length animated movies have kept him entertained so we can have a break or get other things accomplished.

As your baby gets a little older, he will love to look at his own reflection in the mirror. Many baby supply stores and toy stores sell safe, plastic mirrors that can be mounted on the crib or playpen.

Very soon, your child will start to turn over and even sit up. When your child is sitting in a walker, a swing or a high chair, you can give them brightly colored shapes to handle. Just be sure it is safe because they will be putting anything and everything in their mouth. It’s actually funny to watch, but if you aren’t careful, you could end up at the emergency room.

Some ideas that come to mind, include plastic ‘rods’ that fasten onto strollers or walkers and fasten across the front with circles, squares and other shapes attached to the rod. Rattlers and other items that make noise will be great teaching tools developing the all-important motor skills.

Books also allow your child many hours of practicing motor skills as they grow. They can flip pages, look at animal shapes, letters and numbers, and get involved. There are some great interactive-style books on the market today that are great teaching/learning tools. Our son loves them and plays with them for long periods of time.

When your baby is old enough to hold and snuggle a stuffed animal, there are great options for child safe bears and other animals that make noises, talk, sing and play music. This will be around the time you want to get them into a sleeping regimen. It is good to come up with a sleeping buddy they can count on. Trust us when we say we finally got a full nights sleep.

One word of caution is to be a safety conscious parent by making sure the toys you choose are age-appropriate and will not cause any potential harm to your little one.
When you hear horror stories of parents saying oh I just turned my back for a moment or something along those lines, they can happen to you.

Also, buy toys that can be cleaned on occasion. It is easy for your little one to pick up illnesses from germs and such. Just remember they put everything in their mouth, so it is important to use proper cleaners and detergents (check with your doctor on which cleaners to use).

All in all this is a great overview of the importance of utilizing toys for your baby’s first year of development. There is a lot more to consider than you can imagine, but luckily parental instinct kicks in when you decide which toys are best and how to use them accordingly.

          Happy Parenting!!

So, How Much Have I Made with PPP?

Have you been wondering? It's been awhile since I've shared this information with my readers. To date, I've made about $462, mostly from posting opportunities to Mommy Space. I've had a few paid posts on my Cake Space site which was my first PPP approved blog, but Mommy Space has been better suited for the types of opportunities I've found available on PayPerPost.com.

So many of us have blogs, have considered starting a blog, or at least read blogs from time to time. Most blog hosts offer blogs for free. There's nothing to lose! I've been blogging for about a year and half and it's never cost me anything but my time. How cool is that? There are some blogging hosts that do charge, but the majority do not.

Did you also know that PayPerPost is free to join? You can check it out by either looking for the PPP button in my left sidebar, or you can follow the link within this post. The basic rules are that your blog must be 90 days old and have no fewer than 20 posts, 1 of which must have been made within the last 7 days. Basically they want blogs that are kept up and are gaining traffic. The opportunities are clearly presented and when you find one that suits the content of your blog, meets the criteria for your blog, and is something you're interested in, you're free to accept the offer and start writing! 30 days later, you'll be paid via PayPal. Most offers pay anywhere between $4 and $12 each, for 50-300 words. Super easy! Super tempting... isn't it?

Since one of the primary purposes of this blog in the beginning was to share valid opportunities to make money from home, I feel more than a little obligated to continue to share this find with you! Hope you'll give it a try. ; ) If you do, let me know!

          Kindergarten Interactive

As a homeschooling mom to a 5 year old, I'm frequently online looking for tutorials... preferably ones offered free of charge! Sometimes I find a site worth mentioning, and I add new sites on a fairly regular basis to both the kid-friendly tab and the homeschooling sites tab above.

Some of my finds are fancier than others, but when I find a site that appears to have anything that can help teach my little guy, I'm up for spreading the word. Today I found a site that has tutorials and interactives for teaching time, letters, numbers, along with a few printables. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, visit create-a-reader.com and check things out. Nothing fancy, but it does have sound and has a few exercises that will help you determine what your little one knows and doesn't!

          Carry Baby in Style

If you're expecting or know someone who is, don't underestimate the value of a good baby carrier. They're easy enough to find in stores and on the web, but finding the best style along with a design that is comfortable both for mom and baby can sometimes prove challenging.

Fox Den Lane offers a wide array of Baby Carriers including baby wraps, slings, and front and back packs. They also have something called Mei Tai and Podaegi baby carriers that are also known as Asian or ABC style carriers. They're said to be quite comfortable and will make wearing baby more enjoyable!

I have to say, I never knew how stylish a baby carrier could be! Visit this site and be sure to check out all the many links. This website has done a fabulous job of posting photos of the styles they offer... not just photos of the slings themselves, but of the slings and carriers in use.

Teach Your Child to Write Thank You Notes
          By
          Dawn Arkin

Receiving a present is a wonderful thing, especially when you are a child. The excitement of a wrapped gift is surpassed only by the excitement of opening the gift.

But opening the gift is only half of what you should be teaching your child about receiving a present. Sending a thank you note to the sender is just as important.

Start teaching your children early on to write a thank you for gifts. Even a very young child can understand why it is important to tell a giver thank you and help send them out.

Start by explaining to your child why it is important to say thank you for a gift. Talk about how the person cared enough for them to find the perfect item, buy it, wrap it and deliver it. Tell them how special it would be for them to get a note from your child saying how much he loved his present.

Take your child's age into consideration when choosing the thank you cards. A very young child can't write a note, but perhaps they can draw a picture for the giver, and you can include a note saying how much your child enjoyed the present. A child learning to write would enjoy using a thank you card that has the fill in blanks. An older child who knows how to write should write a regular thank you note.

What should be included in a handwritten thank you? Try asking your child what they thought about the gift. You should encourage your child to say thank you, but also say why or how much they appreciated the present.

What should you tell your child if the gift was inappropriate or if it just was not liked by your child? Not every giver is going to find the perfect gift and when your child receives such an item it is a great opportunity to teach your child that it is the thought that counts. Even a gift that is not liked should have a thank you note sent. Explain to your child the present was purchased to celebrate their special day and that is what your child is thanking them for.

When should your child send out a thank you note? Every gift they receive that they aren't able to thank the giver in person for deserves a thank you card and they should be sent as soon as possible after it is given and opened. The evening the gift was opened is a good time to write their thank you notes. Your child is relaxing after an exciting day, and has had a chance to enjoy the present so the words should come faster for your child.

One way to instill writing thank you notes for gifts is for you to always send one out yourself. Children learn their manners from watching the people around them. In the same thought, they will learn to send out thank you notes from watching you send them out.

Raising a polite child is not difficult. Your child will learn by example how to write thank you cards. By doing, you will teach them the manners that will carry them into adulthood.

          Stress... No Laughing Matter

          Stress - Some Facts!
          By
          Cinoy Ravindran

Deadlines, competitions, confrontations, and even our frustrations and sorrows add depth to stress. Change of environment, homesickness, death, separation, anxiety about future & uncertainty in life lead to stress in life. Check out some facts on stress.

75% of the general population experiences at least "some stress" every two weeks (National Health Interview Survey). Almost 9 out of 10 adults have experienced serious stress. More than 4 out of 10 adults suffer adverse health affects from stress, and some estimates suggest that 75 percent to 90 percent of all physician clinic visits are for stress related complaints.

The effects of stress may lead to actual medical illnesses, including heart problems, stomach problems, high blood pressure and headaches. Stress also affects the immune system, which protects us from many serious diseases. Stress also contributes to the development of alcoholism, obesity, suicide, drug and, cigarette addiction, and other harmful behaviors. Stress speeds up aging process, memory loss, hair loss, increase in body weight or building more fat.

$300 billion, or $7,500 per employee, is spent annually in the U.S. on stress-related compensation claims, reduced productivity, absenteeism, health insurance costs, direct medical expenses (nearly 50% higher for workers who report stress), and employee turnover.

It's a fact, people who experience regular stress at work are five times more likely to fall sick than those who don't and its costing UK industries dearly. Recent figures released by the Health and Safety Executive suggest that of 67 million working days lost each year 60 percent of these are stress related.

A survey of the UK’s leading risk managers has predicted that stress is likely to become the most dangerous emerging risk to business in the early part of the twenty-first century.
Following the recent £210,000 payout to the warden of a mobile-home site, the Association of Insurance and Risk Managers reckons that employee stress is the single main emerging risk for UK organizations and the third most important facing society as a whole after genetically modified organisms and e-commerce.

In women, stress causes fatigue, hair loss, bad complexion, insomnia, disruption of menstrual cycle, low libido, lack of orgasm etc. Women, in fact, may be at higher risk than men are from stress-related chest pain, although man's hearts may be more vulnerable to adverse effects from long-term stress, such as from their jobs.

Working mothers, regardless of whether they are married or single, face higher stress levels and possibly adverse health effects, most likely because they bear a greater and more diffuse work load than men or other women. This has been observed in women in the US and in Europe. Such stress may also have a domino and harmful effect on their children

Depressed or aggressive mothers are particularly powerful sources of stress in children, even more important than poverty or overcrowding. Children are frequent victims of stress because they are often unable to communicate their feelings accurately or their responses to events over which they have no control.

Girls tend to become stressed from interpersonal situations, and stress is more likely to lead to depression in girls than in boys. For boys, one study suggested events such as changing schools or poor grades are the most important sources of stress. Another indicated, however, that the probability of childhood behavioral difficulties in a boy is increased with the number and type of stressors encountered in the home.

As people age, the ability to achieve a relaxation response after a stressful event becomes more difficult. Aging may simply wear out the systems in the brain that respond to stress, so that they become inefficient. The elderly, too, are very often exposed to major stressors such as medical problems, the loss of a spouse and friends, a change in a living situation, and financial worries.

Studies show that caregivers of physically or mentally disabled family members are at risk for chronic stress. Spouses caring for a disabled partner are particularly vulnerable to a range of stress-related health threats including influenza, depression, heart disease, and even poorer survival rates. Caring for a spouse with even minor disabilities can induce severe stress. (Intervention programs that are aimed at helping the caregiver approach the situation positively can be very helpful at reducing stress and helping the caregiver maintain a positive attitude.) Wives experience significantly greater stress from care giving than husbands, and, according to a 2000 study, tend to feel more negative about their husbands than care giving husbands feel about their wives.

The lack of an established network of family and friends predisposes one to stress disorders and stress-related health problems, including heart disease and infections. And, a 2000 study reported that older people who maintain active relationships with their adult children are buffered against the adverse health effects of chronic stress-inducing situations, such as low income or lower social class. One study suggested this may be because people who live alone are unable to discuss negative feelings and so relieve their stress.

According to one survey, 40% of American workers describe their jobs as very stressful. Job-related stress is particularly likely to become chronic because it is such a large part of daily life. And, stress in turn reduces a worker's effectiveness by impairing concentration, causing sleeplessness, and increasing the risk for illness, back problems, accidents, and lost time. Work stress can lead to harassment or even violence while on the job. At its most extreme, stress that places such a burden on the heart and circulation may be fatal.

          Detecting Autism in Children

How To Detect Autism In Your Child
          By
          Jon Arnold

Parents obviously want the best for their children and always want to make sure that they are as happy as possible, as well as being as healthy as possible. One of the things that parents should watch for, however, is signs that their child might be suffering from autism or autistic spectrum disorder. The signs of this disease are not immediately obvious compared to a cut finger or bruised knee.

The signs of autism, if you are watching for them, are best to be discovered before the child reaches 1 year old. When caught early, the chances of minimizing the effects of autism are dramatically reduced. Even at very young ages such as a few weeks to a few months, you may be concerned if the child has little or no responsiveness to external stimuli, perhaps seems oblivious to parents or caretakers in the same room or holding them. As they get a bit older, another sign is a failure to anticipate movement, such as when you walk by or wave your hand in front of them.

As parents wanting the best for their children to be able to grow up and mature in a normal manner, it is important to watch for signs of this disorder, also known as Autistic Spectrum Disorder, as quickly as possible. The effects of this disorder can do serious harm to the child’s social development, social interactions, communication skills with others, and their ability to adapt to new situations, which can even extend to staying with you in a hotel on vacation instead of being in their own bed.

There is also a health risk that is enhanced for children with autism, since studies have shown that the autistic child will develop more slowly than other children of the same age and will also typically be more susceptible to diseases and illnesses such as allergies, some mild digestive disorders, and even respiratory problems.

Some of the signs of possible autism in your child that you should watch for and be aware of would include:

          * Responsiveness abnormalities. Children with autism do not respond in the same way as children without autism, and frequently do not even respond to hearing their own name. Children with autism are known to virtually ignore certain sounds.

          * Attention span. Children with autism are frequently unable to concentrate or focus on objects that are shown to them, and also have problems following movement, such as when a parent walks past them.

          * Lack of imitational skills. Autistic children frequently do not imitate their parents with facial expressions or gestures such as waving, smiling, or making faces.

          * Poor social skills. People afflicted with this disorder often have difficulty in understanding other people’s feelings, relating to others around them, or even to be able to illustrate compassion for someone else in distress.

          * Lack of imagination. Autistic children frequently have problems in playing “pretend games” or using their imagination. Children with autism frequently are unable to see things in a way other than the way things actually are.

A great reference for parents concerned about autism in their children, and no parenting library should be without can be found at The Essential Guide To Autism.

It is important to watch for these signs at very early ages during a child’s development, since if autism is successfully diagnosed at an early age, chances are much better that measures can be taken at that very young age to minimize the effects of the disorder.

            Playground Problems

            Dealing with Playground Problems
            By
            Dawn Arkin

Taking your child to the park is one of the great parental joys of life. Watching your child play with other kids, laughing and making friends is a wonderful sight.

But the laughter can turn to tears in a matter of seconds. A taken toy or bonk on the head are enough to ruin your child's good time. For a parent, dealing with the event that caused those tears might be more difficult than dealing with the crying child.

Playgrounds today are filled with children from different backgrounds, ages and parental instruction. Some parents take an active roll in their child's interaction with other kids and some do not. Problem is you will not know which parent you are dealing with until you start talking to them.

How should you handle the situations that will arise during a trip to the playground without causing other parents to draw battle lines in the sand?

            Bumps, Bruises, and Bullies

Children are pure energy machines. They move from place to place and occasionally make contact. What can you do when the tears start?

First thing you should do is calm your child down. Most of the time a kiss and hug are enough to sooth your child's tears. Do so in a calm manner. Flying off the handle will not do anyone any good, and will only make your child more upset. Always assess what happened before approaching anyone. Accidental bumps and falls are going to happen. A feel soothing words to your child is usually enough to dry his tears for accidents.

Now, how should you handle the intentional events?

Teaching your child to walk away from someone who is trying to hurt them is the first thing you should do. If another child is being abusive to him, having him leave the location is usually enough to defuse the situation.

If the other child continues to follow your child, have him come straight to you. In some extreme cases, this might not even be enough to stop an aggressive child. Be cautious about reprimanding someone else's child. Many parents take that as an insult to their parenting skills. Your best course of action is to ask the child to leave your child alone.

If you do have to approach a parent about their child, remember to be calm. Don't accuse them or be insulting. Ask them nicely to intercede. It does no good to verbally attack another parent and it would be a terrible lesson to teach your child.

If the other parent becomes abusive, gather your child and his things and leave. There is no reason to put up with an abusive person or to subject your child to one and staying to deal with an angry parent could be dangerous.

            Stolen toys

What do you do if your child's toy is taken? The first rule of the playground is all toys there are considered fair game. An older child understands the concept of sharing. Younger children cannot stand having their toys touched, much less played with, by another child.

Using playground time to teach your child about sharing is a terrific opportunity. But remember disagreements over toys are going to happen. To guarantee your child's toys come home take a few precautions before you go to the park.

Be sure to put your child's name or initials on all of the toys you bring. It will make getting ready to leave easier. But the best way to keep an irreplaceable toy from being lost is to not take it to the park. Choose toys that can be easily replace.

Going to the park should be a joy for children and parents, a day of sun and fun. It is your job to help make that happen.

            Bisou Cosmetics

This brand of make-up is new to me, but I love shopping for make-up... so I feel right at home looking at Bisou Cosmetics very hip website. It's a fun site to visit. You'll find the navigation super easy and the color options aren't so vast that you'll get lost in them... they're just enough to give you a comfortable selection. This is very important, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about!

Isn't this a cute site! The colors and graphics are pretty snazzy! You'll find the navigation bar on the home page with nothing but simplicity and style in the way of finding you the colors you're looking for.

Bisou Cosmetics sells kits, which are handy when you need a stylish way to take your make-up with you. I love this little leopard printed bag. You'll find great coordinated essentials in eye shadows, blush, and lip gloss. Their compacts have a sleek, clean look that nicely compliment a fine make-up.
The glamour glaze also comes in a variety of shades and looks like a lot of fun. I love gloss, but don't get to splurge on it all that often. This looks awfully inviting!

Their foundation provides light to medium coverage promising a natural glow and is available in both a stick and liquid foundation form. If you've not tried stick, it's so much easier to take with you in your handbag. Bisou calls theirs the Flawless Fix and it comes enriched with Shea Butter and SPF 18. Use it to cover any imperfections or as an all over foundation.

Of course they also offer nail care including a product called Nail Rescue, designed to transform weak, dull, and brittle nails into healthy ones. It can be used as a base, top coat, or clear nail polish. Check this and other Bisou products today and see if they don't just have something you can't live without!

            Work from Home with About.com

If you do many internet searches, you've no doubt landed on About.com's site a few dozen times. Did you ever wonder where they found their expert guides? Did you know you might be qualified to work as an About.com guide, setting your own schedule, as you work from the comfort of home?

If you can prove your expertise on a given topic and are willing to publish a full-length article every two weeks as well as contribute to a blog no fewer than three times a week, you may want to consider applying with About.com as a guide.

This opportunity actually is worth considering if you've got the writing skills and the expertise... or as they state on their site a "passionate expert" that others turn to. According to their own site, successful guides who continue to see page view growth never make less than $500 a month, some earn in excess of $100,000 a year!

A few of the available topics they're currently looking to fill include: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Korean Food, Los Angeles, IPod, Women's Issues, and would you believe it... Web Logs? Do we have any expert Bloggers nearby? Visit the site and see if there's a fit for you.... good luck!

            Forgotten Birthdays

Well maybe not completely forgotten, but have you ever failed at sending a card to a friend or relative? I've done it multiple times over just the past few months. Sure, they know I'm thinking of them, but I guess I can see the benefit of Card-List.com for helping me get the job done.

The service sounds simple enough, you register with the site online, providing the birthdates of those you seek to remember. They send you the pre-addressed stamped card in the mail to sign. All you have to do is place it back in the mailbox. Pretty simple!

See How Silly It Is To Fight?

I wanted to post this video to help us all better appreciate how ridiculous fighting is. When we have issues with our hubbies, friends, or anyone for that matter, arguing isn't really the mature way to handle things. Watch these deer have it out, maybe invite your kids over to the computer to join you, have a good laugh, then see what you can learn from it.

            A Girls Best Friend Indeed!

Daimonds that is. I've been married for 7 years now and I've yet to get a wedding band to accompany my engagement ring. What's worse is I can't even wear the engagement ring I have because it's too big for me. I'm about 20 lbs lighter than I was on my wedding day (that I won't complain about).

I can't help but drool a bit over the jewelry at Navex Jewelers... so beautiful! Whether looking for wedding rings, anniversary rings, or maybe even diamond stud earings, you're sure to be pleased with the sharp look of this website. It's quite easy to navigate and even has a feature allowing you to design your own ring. You choose the diamond, you choose the setting.

I think what I like the best about their site is the education section that teaches you about choosing cut of diamond, color, clarity, and carat. Believe me there's a lot to consider when purchasing diamonds. My husband learned that when he chose my engagement ring years ago. It was fun hearing him explain the features of the daimond he'd selected when he placed it on my finger. I was pretty impressed! He didn't have a website to visit, he had to do his homework on his own. Take advantage of this easy read on selecting quality diamonds.

Navex has a 30 day 100% money back guarantee and ships free worldwide. They'll even engrave a personal message inside your ring. Maybe I should share this link with my husband? lol

Make Money As An Online Juror

Here's a legitimate way to make a few dollars from the comfort of home... sign up to be an online juror. Lawyers sometimes use these online jury sites to decide how to approach a case before it ever reaches the courtroom, possibly determining whether to take the case at all.

A few sites worth signing up with are TrialPractice.com, ZapJury.com, EJury.com, and OnlineVerdict.com. I've placed my verdict with EJury a couple times and was paid $7 each case. The other sites are somewhat unfamiliar to me, but were recently highlighted on ABC News as being completely legitimate and paying anywhere from $10-$60... depending on length.

In the year that I've been registered with EJury.com, I've only received two invitations. With that in mind, my recommendation is to sign on with all 4 sites to improve your chances for invitations, just as you should do when registering with survey sites... the more the merrier!

Establishing Your Business as A Wahm

            By Roschelle Nelson

Thousands of moms have decided to leave the board rooms, factories, restaurants and other traditional outside the home jobs, and earn or supplement their family income with a work at home venture. The question is what will you do.

The first and most important item on your agenda should be to find a business. Research business ventures that are of interest to you. Whether it's arts and crafts, affiliate marketing, telecommuting, or some other type money making enterprise know your niche. There are endless websites, articles, ebooks and forums that can give you great ideas about what best suits you.

Secondly, know whether you want to establish a home business or obtain a work at home job. There is a difference. Starting a work at home business means you are the CEO from the beginning. Determine what type of requirements must be met to operate a business out of your home. Check with your state's business development office or the Small Business Administration for guidelines. Become familiar with the tax advantages of owning your own home based business. Be prepared for some expenses. Starting a business regardless of how small will require some investment capital. However, if you've decided to obtain a work from home job, this shouldn't require an upfront investment. A work at home job or telecommuting job, as they are often referred to, is just like a job outside the home. There should be no fees involved in this type venture.

Once you've decided which route you plan to take, start marketing and/or promoting your business. If your business revenue will be generated greatly from your website, find ways to promote your site online. Web promotion offline is an easy way to start. Word of mouth from you to those in your community
can be your first step. Passing out flyers and business cards are also ideal ways to promote your business offline.

When it comes to promoting your business online utilize forums, link and banner exchanges, email marketing, listings in business directories and paid advertising are all excellent methods of promotion. Make sure to set a budget that's affordable and don't exceed that budget under any circumstances.

Finally, make your home conducive to your productivity. Hours spent in a chair with your laptop wobbling around on your lap will get old quick. Set aside your work space. Treat your home office just as you would your away from home work space. A small desk, chair, filing cabinet, computer (of course), printer, and fax are necessary to run a successful business. Plus, your home office and supplies can all be tax deductible.

New Year's Resolutions?? How About New Month?

I don't know about you, but I don't like New Year's Resolutions and I don't think they're worth making. Everyone I know, including myself usually blows their resolutions within the first few weeks of a new year, resulting in feelings of defeat. We then go on to continue our bad habits for the remainder of the year. This just seems crazy and completely nonproductive.

Considering how our brains work, with short-term goals being so much more effective than long term, I asked myself the other day if I thought setting new months resolutions would be more effective? I do believe they would, at least for me. Also, we need to feel that we're doing well in order to continue to do well... don't we? It's so much easier to set short term goals, see progress and feel good about ourselves than to set ridiculous long term goals and spend the entire month of February feeling like a failure. Can you relate?

So, my goal this year, my New Year's Resolution if you will, is to set resolutions month by month that will create a healthier lifestlye and hopefully month by month I'll see more gains than losses, more triumphs than defeats, which could add up by the end of the year to really be worth something to write about.

So, here's my first new month's resolution: To lose the 3 lbs I gained over the month of December and maybe a couple extra just to get me back comfortably into my favorite blue jeans. So, that's it for this month. No promises to myself to hit the gym everyday... I'll just pace myself, drink loads of water, lay off the sweets, and cut back on wheat products. If I do this for the next 30 days I have no doubt that the 5 lbs will be easily lost.

This was an easy resolution for me to assign myself, since as I'm sitting here at my computer I feel incredibly bloated and well, puffy. I'm not sure if all my months will be as easy or as obvious, but follow my progress... I plan on have a weekly update on each month's resolution as well as a monthly post stating each months new goal.

If anyone is interested in a great article on healthy ways to lose 5 lbs... here's a a great (short) read on losing 5 fast by Monica Neave. This will be the guide I use to achieve my first month's resolution of the year! I'll keep you posted on my progress.

            New Site for Ebay Bargains

Check out this very handy website, listing Ebay auctions at $1 with only an hour left for bidding! What a cool idea. If you're looking for a deal, what better way than this? Sometimes getting a great buy is just about being in the right place at the right time, with the assistance of Lastminute Auction that place and time come to you.

Whether you're looking for toys, video games, or some inexpensive jewelry, you'll want to visit this site today. Of course you'll want to act fast as all listings on this site expire within the hour. With Ebay it's always been about timing your bid just right.

This is an interesting idea and one I wish I'd known about sooner. Would you believe I just pulled up a men's stainless steel ring for .98 cents? Not bad. Be sure when you're bidding to always examine shipping costs, you might be buying from Hong Kong after all! Otherwise, happy bidding!

              • It's very competitive. If you want the work, you'll need to check the opportunities list frequently and claim the opportunity before someone else grabs it. It's first come first serve.

              • Emails aren't always answered

Qualifications: Your blog will need to be at least 90 days old and be active, meaning you should be regularly posting (at least once per week). Your blog must have no fewer than 20 posts. Once you begin posting for PPP you're required to have at least one non sponsored post between each paid to blog opportunity. You're also required to house a disclosure statement on your blog and mention at the end of each paid post that it's a sponsored post. See sample here.

                Downs:

                • Not as many opportunities for work

                • Sometimes the offers don't fit with your blog's subject matter

                • Your blog entry must be permanently left on your blog

Qualifications: You'll need to submit your blog for approval, but I'm not aware of the qualifications required for acceptance.

                Creamaid

                Downs:

                ReviewMe

                Ups:

                • Free to register

                • You're paid to review web sites and services

                • The offers come to you via email. Once your blog is accepted it's placed on the ReviewMe marketplace where clients can purchase reviews from you.

                • You can either accept or decline the offer

                • Payment ranges from $20 to $200 per review

                • Payment on time via PayPal

                Downs:

                • Few offers, no guarantee you'll have offers at all

                • From what I've heard page rank is important. The blog I've registered with them and have had one assignment from had a PR4.

                Blogitive

I can't tell you much about this one! I submitted my blogs awhile back and to date haven't received any information or offers. If I find out more, I'll be sure to share!

Get compensated for your opinion. I'm not yet registered with this site. I'm doing well enough with PPP, Blogvertise, and Creamaid that I haven't yet become motivated to explore this paid to blog site, but have read posts on message boards from others who are happy with this outfit.

Pedometer Freebie for People with Osteoarthritis

Just Keep Moving is offering a free pedometer to anyone registering with their site. Their program is designed to minimize the effects of osteoarthritis with exercise, diet, weightloss, and using safer pain relief methods.

I'm not taking part in this freebie offer since I'm not personally suffering from arthritis, but imagine many of us have parents, grandparents, or friends who are. Spread the word! This is a free program and appears to be a healthy approach to taking control of one's condition.
