Ideas for Moms Wishing to Work from Home

I find these lists all the time and unfortunately don't find them all that useful. Here's one I just uncovered that list a combination of professional gigs like graphic design and editor along with just plain goofy ideas like candy wrapping and scrapbooking. While I'm sure there is a market for anything, given the right mix of talent and drive, I just don't find the idea of wrapping candy all that motivating.

Other ideas from the list included doggie daycare, tutoring, and babysitting. These seem like reasonable ideas, but who among us hasn't already contemplated the obvious? If you're like me and you're not qualified to tutor and you don't have the space for doggie daycare or the temperament to babysit, what then?

Let's look a bit deeper... the list goes on to suggest cake baking and decorating or catering. Hmmmm... that could get you some real trouble. Seriously. If you ever decide to consider this line of work (from home) you had better check with your state first. Most likely the health department. Most states require special licenses for home bakeries... some don't allow home bakeries at all. Even with a license you may have to have a separate kitchen from the one you use for your family and most likely you'll be required to have a separate entrance for customers. I'd love to cook and bake from home and if it weren't for these pesky laws designed to protect consumers, I'd likely have my stay-at-home business nailed.

So, what's next. Basically, more suggestions requiring schooling... like transcription and web design. That's great... if you can afford to go back to school, but ya... then you're not really home with the kids either. So...

Here are the only suggestions I found on this list worth anything to me personally... Ebay selling, errand service, professional organizer, and well... blogging (which by the way wasn't on the list).

Ladies, long post short... you have to get really creative if you want to make your dreams of staying home come true. Don't try to put on a shoe that doesn't fit. You won't be happy... you'll just be frustrated. Ask yourself what you are good at and/or enjoy doing. Then, try and figure out how to turn that skill or interest into a business. It can be anything really, but the important thing is to find something you can and will stick with. Chances are whatever you come up with won't come from any list, and that will be why you're successful at it. Be original, be creative, brainstorm with a friend, take an aptitude test and get honest with who you are and what you're capable of. Also consider how many hours a week you can devote to working and how on board your spouse will be with whatever it is you decide to do.

WAH Scam... Please Read

I just found a WAHM online at Wahm.com who was kind enough to share her story of having been scammed for the first time. I wanted to share her story with my readers, as this can happen to anyone. Please check her story out in full here... Scammed for The First Time

Basically she wants to warn us about a company called Gigmarketer/Brainstorm Productions LLC, but these companies can change names like most of us change our socks. Don't feel safe if you're considering giving someone you've come across online $49 for a data entry job. Never ever pay anyone for a job. It's almost always a bad sign. There is little to no recourse once you've given away your money to an online scammer. This work-at-home mom was lucky as the amount she lost was only $49. I've read numerous stories of women losing hundreds of dollars to the sharks who make a living feeding off our desperation for work.

If you're new to the telecommuting world and still looking for work, please read our Wahm Scam article to prepare yourself for what you may encounter. Educate yourself and be careful. These crooks know how desperate many of us are and count on us wanting to believe they are the answer to our prayers.
