WAHM Scam... Your Anti-Scam Resource
Simple Advice for Avoiding Work-at-Home Scam
Ok ladies, It's time to put on our radar hats and crank up the controls into overdrive. As awesome a tool as the internet is, you really have to be cautious about the anonymous nature of the leads you follow and what you interpret to be genuine and legitimate. Work at home scam is everywhere and it's making thieves with an entrepreneurial spirit, exceedingly wealthy. Let's make a pack to team together and stop funding their evil scams. How do we do that? By getting smarter about what do with the little money we have. I can't stand crooks, but especially those taking advantage of moms who are innocently looking for ways to stay home with their children.
I know you're feeling desperate, but hang in there, research everything and know what you're skills are. Ask yourself why someone would pay another person to do whatever it is they're asking you to do. Do you even know what they're asking you to do? Ask yourself if it makes good economic sense to hire you, a stranger, to work from home.
You've no doubt heard the advice before, but I'm going to say it again... NEVER pay someone to work for them. NEVER pay for a program, package, background check, telecommuting list, or anything that is said to be required or recommended to "get the job". A legitimate job won't cost you anything at all.
Here are some links to better equip you with information on avoiding and reporting scam.
- Better Business Bureau
- BBB Online
- Web Chamber of Commerce
- Federal Trade Commission
- Warning from USPS about envelope stuffing
- Monster Career Advice "A Safe Job Search"
- Craigslist "Avoiding Scams & Fraud"
- Scam.com Forum
- Scambusters.com
- WAHM Scams are Everywhere. Work from home scams can be found on popular, legitimate job boards including CareerBuilder, Monster, Yahoo Hot Jobs, and Craigslist. You should never assume any job listing is legitimate based on its location on the web.
- Get Rich Quick Claims should send you running. The only people getting rich with such claims are the ones making them.
- Direct Deposit or Something Else? Never provide bank account information to someone offering you a work from home opportunity... not for any reason. What looks like a set up for direct deposit into your bank account, is more likely a means of depleting your account.
- Avoid Requests for Suspicious Transactions. Never forward money from your account to another account... under any circumstance. A legitimate employer would have no need for you to conduct such activity.
- Counterfeited Promises. Checks, Money Orders, and even Cashier's Checks can be counterfeited. Wire transfers are also a popular means of thievery. Many of these scam artists live outside of the USA and there is nothing that can be done once they have your money. Don't assume any different if the scammer lives in your own neighborhood.
- Keep Your Money. Never pay a fee for any service, package, training, directories, start-up kits, or background check. This should be your tip-off that something is array. Never pay for a list of legitimate employers looking to hire people to work from home. Don't pay for a list of telecommuter-friendly employers. This list won't help you. Companies who have a history with hiring telecommuters is nice to know about, but you're not going to find an actual job this way.
- All Professions are Subject to Scams. Recognize that while there are many popular scams repeating themselves a million times over, no profession is immune from job scam.
- Secure Your Personal Information. Don't provide your Social Security number, a copy of your driver's license, information from your driver's license, or your date of birth to anyone. Identity theft is running rampant, use your best judgment when disclosing private information online.
- Phone #'s Spell Trouble: Don't respond to job posting that only provide a phone number. Legitimate employers will ask for a resume and provide you with a physical address, email address, or fax number. If you're provided with an email address that doesn't match a domain name for a corresponding website, or if you're given a Post Office box rather than a physical address, you should use extra precaution. It's not necessarily a red flag, but should be investigated. It's always a good idea to do an internet search on the name of the business, employer or opportunity, just to see if anyone's talking. Blogs are a great tool for this type of research as are message boards. It's highly recommended to conduct a Goolge search just to see if the company has its own website or to see if other sites make mention of it. If so, pay attention to what they're saying. A new scam might not be documented anywhere, but it's a good idea to look before you leap.
- Experience Required: Legitimate employers want to know what your qualifications are, even if they're looking to fill an entry-level position. If you come across a job posting that states no experience necessary and shows absolutely no interest in knowing your background, requests no resume, work references, or work samples, you should be suspicious.
- Entry-Level & Telecommuting: Most employers will not offer telecommuting jobs to entry-level employees. Training someone who isn't physically present often proves to be too challenging.
- Beware of MLM's.Multi-Level Marketing is all about your ability to recruit new people to sell a product. By becoming a distributor with whatever company might be involved you're usually entitled to a good discount and are allowed to then turn around and sell whatever the product might be at retail prices. You're pressured to constantly recruit and train new distributors in an effort to increase your earnings, as well as the earnings of whoever recruited you. Each generation is entitled to a certain percentage of the profits from sales and start up kits. My personal observations with this type of program has been that a few make a good living, but the majority struggle and eventually walk away with nothing to show for their efforts.
- Ask For References It's ok to ask. A legitimate employer or client looking to contract with you as an independent contractor should be able to supply you with references.
- Don't Feed the Sharks! Never act in desperation. Scammers prey on the desperate and women wishing to work from home are their biggest target. Don't appear overly anxious any more than you would at a used car lot. Be certain to avoid making any decision in desperation. Take your time, research the employer or opportunity, and make a wise and informed decision.

A Few Tips from Mommy Space
Scammers are after two things... stealing your money and/or your identity. Here are a few rules to follow:

My Take on Real Rank
Oh, happy day! There seems to be some real life in IZEA's Real Rank system after all, despite what some of it's biggest critics claim. Me, my blog and I are living proof that the battle with Google is far from over.
A little background... you may or not be aware of the problems many bloggers have recently encountered concerning Google's great displeasure with paid posting. In a nutshell, Google considers such activity to be link-selling and objects to the way in which it jeopardizes the integrity of their indexing system.
Recently, many die hard bloggers who were participating in paid blogging were dealt a would be fatal blow with the loss of precious Google page rank, seemingly leaving our blogs worthless to advertisers who might otherwise market their businesses and services through our blogs. I'm not simply speaking of the lost potential to continue paid posting, but even getting advertisers to buy space on our blogs was at jeopardy.
IZEA's plan to counteract Google's recent actions has been to introduce a new ranking system called "Real Rank". This new technique uses real data to determine the amount of traffic your blog is receiving and therefore should communicate to potential advertisers the degree of influence each of our blogs carry.
By registering with IZEA, you can easily determine where your blog ranks using the Real Rank system. It's free and relatively painless to do! This new blog ranking system is a sigh of relief, a breath of fresh air, a new hope for a better blogging tomorrow! lol No, but seriously, when Google first disarmed by blog of Page Rank, I was more than a little depressed. Would you believe I cried myself to sleep? Yes, um... I sure did, but then someone said the words, "Real Rank" and I found that all hope was not lost after all.
In fact, thanks to Real Rank, I continue to earn money as a blogger through PayPerPost. I'm slowly regaining the momentum that was taken away from me just a few short months ago. I don't know exactly how many blogs I'm competing against, but Mommy Space normally fluctuates between 1500 and 2800, which must not be too horrible because I often qualify for opportunities limited to bloggers with Page Rank in the top 40%.
So what should your next step be... if you want to know what your Real Rank is? Simply visit IZEARanks.com and install the provided code. You'll then have the first online tool focusing soley on real traffic data, which communicates real value to advertisers. While you're at IZEARank.com compare your blog stats to others and see where you stand... then work like mad to get your traffic flowing into your blog to increase your precious Real Rank status. Oh, and don't forget to have fun while you're at it!

Oyster Awareness on Mommy Space
Why did the oyster cross the road? To get to the preheated oven.
Don't buy it? lol Ok... all joking aside, this post has little-to-nothing to do with tickling your funny bone and everything to do with educating the public about the dangers associated with consuming undercooked or raw oysters.
The threat is especially relevant to individuals with weak immune systems and those battling diabetes or liver disease. Believe it or not, the Vibrio Vulnificus bacteria can lead to serious illness... even death. If you're healthy, the bacteria will likely pass through your system without incident, but for those with certain diseases or conditions, the consequences can be dire. Other conditions that warrant concern include cancer, those with stomach disorders, people suffering from iron overload disease, and as mentioned previously... anyone struggling with a compromised immune system.
If you're in love with Gulf oysters visit the Be Oyster Aware website to learn how to safely prepare your next dish, as to avoid any unnecessary illness to you or those around you. This website includes wonderful recipes as well!
